THE BEST SKIING IN THE CAUCASUS
Skiing in Georgia. Two oldest and most famous skiing resorts in Georgia are Gudauri and Bakuriani. Mestia, the capital of Svanetia region, became known as a new skiing destination in northwest Georgia since 2011.
Gudauri is located on the Greater Caucasus mountain range in northeast Georgia. Advanced skiers may enjoy slalom, downhill and free-riding in Gudauri. Common length of Gudauri ski runs in 25 km. This ski resort is located in 125 km from the capital Tbilisi.
Bakuriani lays in 175 km from Tbilisi at an elevation of 1700 meters above sea level in the Caucasus mountains. Families with children love to ski in this area. Bakuriani ski resort is located not far from Borjomi, known for its mineral water of the same name and spas. Pine-tree forests of Bakuriani are equally suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers. The slope hight varies from 400 to 900 meters here. There are also good facilities for snowboarders in Bakuriani. Snow lays here for 4-5 months in a year. Bakuriani is located in a two and a half hour ride from Tbilisi.
Mestia became a chief rival to the above mentioned ski areas. It has a brand new airport and tourism infrastructure. Snow is guaranteed here. The station of ski lift is at 1500 meters above sea level. Skiing in the mountains is possible even in summer. Hotels are located in Mestia, Ushba snd Tetnuldi. They can accept 400-450 guests. There are also about 50 guest houses in this area. One may get to Mestia by car, by plane or by helicopter from Tbilisi or Koetaisi. Prices in Georgia are absolutely reasonable. Day ski pass in Mestia costs 80 lari (about 30 Euro) per person.
